For 3 days in early August, 6 FC Wisconsin coaches attended the LaLiga Formation Methodology Level 3 coaching course in Chicago in an incredible learning and coaching education environment. The unique course featured coaching educators from the best clubs in Spain, and who do prominent coaching education work throughout the world.  The course was co-hosted by LaLiga (the Spanish professional league) and US Club Soccer.

The focus of the instruction in the course was creating a coaching methodology for long-term development of individual players - a very different process and goal than creating a coaching methodology for a winning team today.  The Spanish education method, which has established LaLiga and Spanish players as the best in the world, is designed to insure that a young player that joins a development club at an early age is taught all the ideas, concepts, and techniques that they will need to be fully developed by the time they are 16 years old.  Raul Gonzalez Blanco, the 3rd highest scorer in UEFA Champions League and one of the most famous stars in Real Madrid history, was in attendance at the course to provide his insights and opinions on development as well.

The lead educator in the course was Gari Fullaondo, former Methodology Director for Athletic Bilbao in Spain, one of 3 clubs never to have been relegated from the first division of Spanish football.  Drawing all of their players solely from the Basque region of Spain, and solely playing with players of Basque heritage, Athletic Bilbao has developed some of the top teams in Europe and never been relegated in Spain, all with only a total population base of 2,000,000 people.

Andy Lee, Hayley Lavers, Christina Toda, Billy Solberg, and Ben Sheperd all attended the course.  Christian Lavers, who traveled to Spain in 2015 to help structure the course for US Club Soccer and the American market, was also at the course.

The course is totally unique in coaching education in the United States. To read more about the course, click here.
